BIO
Maroeska Metz was born in Amsterdam, 1959, and graduated at the Rietveld Art Academy Amsterdam. After finishing her studies, she worked several years as a sculptor but gradually changed her focus to installations. Making installations gave her creative control over the spacess and brought her more and more into interior design.
Her first interior product was a chandelier, at the end of the 1980s. As a the founder of the new ‘baroque’ style of that time, she had success with her elegant and original lamps. Ultimately she stopped making art and dedicated herself completely to interior design. The chandelier led her to lamps. They are her great passion and seem to share much with jewellery, the other passion that gave birth to Riccio Jewelry. The two passions nourish each other. “Lamps can make all the difference in an interior” Maroeska says. A lamp is the jewel of a space. It should say something; it should enhance a room and intensify its personality. The same thing can be said about jewellery. It should make a woman beautiful and intensify her individuality. By seeing a woman’s jewellery, you know something about her and immediately recognise her elegant and unique style.
Maroeska’s collection of lamps has steadily grown, with each new series having its own atmosphere and use. Her designs do fit into a modern interior and also into more classical spaces. In the modern interior they offer contrast: a striking elegant light object into a minimalist space. In the classical interior they add a humorous touch. Sometimes Maroeska does blend her ideas with clients in custom made lamps.
Maroeska has had her own company but also designed furniture for other companies. Her collection has expanded to include sofa’s, couches, chairs and bed’s and children’s furniture along with accessories ranging from vases, mirrors and crystal table settings to carpets, door-handles, tiles, plates, a cheese slicer and outdoor lighting.
Maroeska’s design vision refers to the past but definitely has a modern touch. She finds her inspiration in nature, architecture and in their combination, as seen in the Wiener Werkstaette, Empire furniture and period castles.
Her art is a classically-based language but the connection of almost all her pieces will be her “curl”, appearing in endless variations. It’s this never ending inspiration that impresses those drawn to her work. Continuing this very coherent and recognisable style is Maroeska’s power.
She has clients from around the world. Her collection attracts a select group of height-end customers. Once they become fans of her style, they return often to follow its new expressions.
